The nature of Gran Canaria is giving joy to its inhabitants from hundreds of years ago. The first joy gives the climate that can be enjoyed here year-round. Good time that makes life friendly and quiet. Although it is not only good weather than they are talking about when we say that nature has been kind to Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria is a continent in miniature, with a collection of very unusual landscapes, in the midst of an enormously diverse archipelago. Why Unesco decided to grant the island biosphere reserve seal. To actively support the conservation of the pieces of this puzzle of natural sceneries, a different and very specific MicroWorld. Almost half of the geographical area of Gran Canaria has been included in the reservation, covering six rural population centres, linked to traditional activities.

But what is the nature of Gran Canaria to be worthy of recognition by Unesco? First, the island is a theme park of the strange and magical flora of Macaronesia. An open park that holds the treasure of plants and flowers that grew independently from the rest of the globe, with the seal of the Macaronesia region. A natural world that has been living at your own pace for centuries, among the changing features of the island.

And it is therein, in its relief, in its special geomorphological configuration, where another of the peculiarities of Gran Canaria. A huge cauldron of sinking, the Caldera de Tejeda, dominates the Centre of the island, and deploys a network of drainage of storm water that cover ravines and meander down to the sea at the same time. Altogether, it can be considered Gran Canaria as a massif that rises from sea level to 1,949 meters of altitude of the Pico de Las Nieves.

The altitude of the island and the abrupt relief allow many micro-climates and habitats. In this regard, emphasizes the southwest of Gran Canaria, which has maintained its natural environment for centuries sheltered. In this area are large tracts of forests of Canary Island pine, a tree of special features that make it unique in the world. On the other hand, human activities have been added to the environment, to the point that it is difficult to differentiate the elements introduced by the traditional work with the original landscape of the island, forming around a peculiar landscape mosaic, which now cares for future generations.

The character of Gran Canaria Island of contrasts is repeated on the coast. Hiperaridos or arid environments with cardones and tabaibas dominate from the coast and up to 300 meters of altitude. The funds of the ravines and valleys are occupied by palm groves, tarahal and willow. The coast, with large deltas submerged, submarine volcanic lava flows, high cliffs and interconnected sand banks.

All this natural juice produces the wealth in biodiversity where moving the loggerhead sea turtle, bottlenose and Risso. Each day gather everyone in a new representation. Thousand climates and thousand species natural dancing together on an island biosphere reserve.
